Teens 'N Transition A collaboration with the Freeport School District

Teens ‘N Transition (T’NT) is a collaborative project with the Freeport School District designed to reach students who receive special education services, yet “fall between the cracks” with important transition services. In providing these transition services to students with disabilities, RAMP increases their chances of becoming prepared young adults ready to gain employment, manage a budget and live independently in the community after the completion of high school.

The T’NT project is a sixteen week class, it is not your typical lecture class. RAMP’s Youth Education Advocate and Freeport’s Special Education Teachers “team teach” the class. Students are given hands-on projects and homework to complete. For example, one unit entails furnishing an apartment. The students make a list of everything they will need and then price those items. They return with the costs and apply this to their “budget”. The concept of “need” and “want” is made clear with this exercise. Other units covered: goal setting; time management and organizational skills; an employment toolbox including resumes, job applications, practice interviews and job skills; banking and savings accounts and how to balance them; credit cards and loans; consumer awareness and comparative shopping; peer influences and relationships; character building and leadership; community resources, self-advocacy and meeting your medical needs including wellness and self-care skills.

Materials for T’NT are provided by through the Freeport School District. For more information about T’NT please contact Stephenson County RAMP.
