Education & Advocacy Specialist - Rockford

 RAMP is a passionate partner for people with disabilities desiring to live a useful and rewarding life. We empower people with disabilities to realize there are no limits to what they can do. We accomplish this by assisting them to live independently, make changes in their own live, seek peer support, obtain resources and remove barriers that threaten their dreams of independence. RAMP advocates the implementation of current laws, promotion of needed legislation and improvement of existing systems for persons with disabilities while working to diminish negative attitudes that threaten to impede equal access. RAMP is a non profit with an intimate understanding of the needs and solutions to advance the lives of persons with disabilities. We have this understanding because the majority of our staff and board of directors have a disability. We are a group of determined and caring individuals prepared to arm consumers with the tools and expectations necessary for them to guide their life now and in the future.

Education & Advocacy Specialist
Purpose of Position:  To advance the organization’s efforts to achieve a barrier-free society by educating the community about the needs and abilities of persons with disabilities; advocating with persons with disabilities on behalf of their systemic and individual rights; advocating with businesses, service providers, local and State government officials and others about the issues concerning persons with disabilities.

Requirements of Position

1. Associates or Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience;

2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

3. Current knowledge or ability to learn and understand laws such as the ADA, Environmental Barriers Act, Fair Housing, Human Rights, etc., and the ability to conduct accessibility audits based on these laws;

4.   Creative in approaching individual and systemic advocacy issues;

5.  Ability to educate the community about issues surrounding disability needs and educate individuals about their options;

6.   Personal experience with a disability;

7.   A belief and commitment to the Independent Living Philosophy and a vision for its implementation;

8.   Self-motivated and a team player to involve all staff in systems advocacy and be a resource for them;

9.   Reliable transportation and a willingness to work evening and weekend hours as necessary and to travel when needed.

Position Parameters
:
  Full-time; salaried; medical and dental benefits; flexible medical spending accounts; 401(k) plan; life insurance; EAP; travel and expenses reimbursed; 10 paid holidays; paid vacation and sick time; reports directly to the Services Director.
